Baker Elementary Guidance Program
MEET BAKER’S COUNSELOR
Mrs. Wilhelmina Greene is Baker’s full time school counselor. Last year she was the Gilman Award recipient from the Varina District. Mrs. Greene’s undergraduate degree is from Virginia State University in Elementary Education and her Master’s Degree is in Guidance and Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has taught for 18 years in third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades. In 1994 and 2001 she was selected to WHO’S WHO AMONG AMERICA’S TEACHERS.
CLASSROOM GUIDANCE
The purpose of Baker’s guidance program is to help all students succeed academically. The developmental issues for your child’s grade level are outlined in the Henrico County Guidance Essentials of the Curriculum Card that is available to you in your child’s school.
GROUP COUNSELING
Group counseling is available to all students. Teachers and parents have requested specific groups for certain children. Parental permission letters are sent home prior to group participation.
WHAT DOES A SCHOOL COUNSELOR DO?
*Develops a guidance plan based on a school needs assessments
*Counsels with students individually and/or in groups
*Provides systematic and developmental classroom guidance
*Responds to student needs
*Orients students to new school settings
*Works with absentees, potential dropouts and other at-risk students
*Participates in the referral process of students to special programs
*Participates in the referral process of students and /or parents to services
and agencies outside the school
*Analyzes test results to provide information about abilities, achievement,
interests and needs
*Conducts conferences with parent
COUNSELING GROUPS OFFERED:
Self-Esteem Group – students with low self concept
Friendship Group – making new friends and getting along with others
Survival Skills Group – Latch Key Kids who spend period of time by themselves
Feeling Group – experiencing difficulty dealing with their feelings of anger, shyness etc.
Banana Split Group – students experiencing separation/divorce
Problem Solving Group – students who need help in making appropriate choices
O.K. Kids Group – focus on good nutrition and exercise
